The newest Xoco Crunch is a reinterpretation of the classic Thai dessert Kanom Bueang — a delicate crispy crepe rolled like a taco that can be eaten in one crunchy mouthful. Thais have a love for savory and sweet desserts and the Kanom Bueang is usually offered two ways — sweet or salty, but in both the savory element is consistent. The sweet is generally coconut cream and golden egg yolk thread (Foi Thong), while the salty is topped a variety of ways with coriander, small salty dried shrimps and green onions. The toppings can vary from vendor to vendor, but there must always be the sweet or salty variation.
The Kanom Bueang Riff Off Xoco Crunch, as the name suggests, is a play on this dessert. The inherent crunchiness of butter crunch mimics the crispy crepe, and to achieve the killer combo of savory sweet, this crunch has white pepper, coriander and fried garlic. Oh, and it is finished with fish sauce. Don’t let this be the make or break decision for you, fish sauce is used a lot in Thai food and it doesn’t add a fishy flavor, it adds delicious umami. Besides, if you’ve been enjoying Thai food, you’ve been on board with fish sauce for awhile now. The crunch is partially dipped in 58% Prachuap Khiri Khan dark coconut milk chocolate and toasted sesame seeds. The lively, herby green of the cilantro is so pretty in the crunch and I didn’t want to over power this truly phenomenal and unique crunch with too much chocolate. You really have to try this. Ingredients: 58% dark milk chocolate made with Thai cacao (58% cacao solids, cocoa butter, coconut flakes, sugar), toasted sesame seeds, fresh cilantro, fried garlic, fish sauce, Thai black & white pepper, vanilla extract
